Earl F. Berard - Woonsocket

Earl F. Berard, 82, passed away Aug. 12, 2008, at Mount St. Francis Health Center in Woonsocket.

Born Aug. 5, 1929, in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Joseph and Rena (Ducharme) Berard. He was the beloved husband of 60 years of Therese (Gagne) Berard of Woonsocket; the loving father of Louise T. Christie of Mystic, Conn., Suzanne I. Langlois in Georgia, and Yvette M. and her husband Thomas J. Plouffe of Woonsocket; and the devoted grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of six. He was the brother of the late Russell R. Berard.

A lifelong resident of Woonsocket, he was the plant manager for Exercycle Corp. until retiring. He also worked for Century 21 as a Realtor for seven years, worked at Electric Boat for four years as general foreman, for Raytheon in Portsmouth as an industrial engineer, and for Fram Aerospace in Pawtucket as a machine shop foreman. He worked for 20 years for Taft-Peirce Manufacturing Company as a tool and gage maker and served as union president for the AFL-IAM Little Rhodey Lodge 1606. Mr. Berard served four terms on the Woonsocket City Council, was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 113, served as president of the former St. Clare Home and School Association and as a manger of the Red Cross Shelter of Woonsocket. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 85.

He attended Roger Williams University and Bryant College. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was a torpedoman’s mate third class aboard the submarine tender USS Apollo in the Pacific theater and received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal and the American Theatre Medal. Mr. and Mrs. Berard were married in St. Ann’s Church April 26, 1948.

His funeral will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. from Cartier’s Funeral Home, 151 South Main St., Route 126, Bellingham, Mass., with a Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. in St. Charles Church, North Main Street, Woonsocket. Interment with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Visiting hours are Friday from 5-8 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
