HOUSE OF THE WEEK - Unique Timberpeg house has views of Franklin Farm

CUMBERLAND - Across Abbott Run Valley Road from the town's community gardens at Franklin Farm is this one-of-a-kind Timberpeg saltbox house. Abutting the back yard is more of the preserved Franklin Farm property.

Southern yellow pine posts and beams cut in New Hampshire specifically for this custom-designed house are joined by wooden pegs. Because of its wooden walls and ceilings, the house has the warmth and charm of a northern vacation home. An impressive stone chimney rises in the center of the house; its fireplace is in the living room, but the stone surface is open on all four sides of the chimney.

The first floor layout includes an open center staircase and balcony that overlooks the living room. All the first floor rooms have lovely pine board and beamed ceilings. There are skylights throughout. A second floor loft overlooks the living room. Sliding doors lead to a screen porch.

There's a first-floor bedroom and full bath with laundry to the rear of the house. A walk around the stone chimney leads to the kitchen and open family room, where a breakfast bar built on the diagonal separates the two rooms. The kitchen has a tile floor. A wall of eight windows surrounds the cooking and sink area - in one corner is a deep double sink and the other has a gas cooktop. The oven is built into a wall. To the rear of the kitchen is a formal dining room. Here, a side door leads to the driveway and garage, and opposite, a sliding glass door leads to a private deck.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has two skylights, two closets and a lovely window seat. The bathroom has a whirlpool tub and corner glass shower. The loft room is used as a guest bedroom, and also has two skylights.

The basement has a large, carpeted office with two deep closets. An unfinished room houses the utilities. Heat and hot water are by natural gas, forced hot water, and electric is 200 amp circuit breakers. There are five zones of heat, and three zones of air-conditioning.

The attached two-car garage has storage space upstairs. Cedar shakes cover the roof.

The house offers 2,370 square feet of living area, with three bedrooms and two baths. It's listed at $434,900 by Residential Properties. Donna Ellis is the listing agent. Reach her at 333-9333 or 457-1346.
