Grumpy's captures state softball title

Grumpy's Restaurant of Bellingham, a member of the Woonsocket Independent Softball League, recently captured the championship in the annual Rhode Island ASA Class E tournament.

The team completed the weekend tourney played at fields in Warwick, Cranston and Pawtucket, with a 6-1 record while playing against some of the best softball teams in Rhode Island.

Grumpy's capped off an impressive first day by putting together a come-from-behind extra-inning win over Stateline of Cranston to remain undefeated in the tournament.

Grumpy's forced the game into extra innings when Jared Tapley smacked a one-out triple in the bottom of the seventh inning and later scored to tie the game.

In the top of the eighth inning, Stateline threatened to score, but a run was cut down at the plate when Adam Vadenais unloaded a laser throw to nail the potential go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the frame, Paul Black reached second and was plated when Steve Linehan came through with a clutch base hit.

Grumpy's was forced into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament the next day when it could not find its offense and fell, 8-3 to Stravatos of Warwick. That left Stravatos as the tournament's only unbeaten team.

In the finals of the loser's bracket, Grumpy's put together a strong defensive game and eliminated Stateline, 11-1, pounding out 19 hits in the process, and moved to the championship round against Stravatos needing to beat the Warwick team twice to claim the title.

In the first game, Grumpy's continued a hitting rampage that started a game earlier and pounded Stravatos, 18-1. Steve Dube and Scott Archambeault paced the offense.

That set up a winner-take-all contest between the same two teams.

With Chad Trudeau and Tapley providing key hits and Derek Dusablon solid on the mound, Grumpy's carved out a 10-7 win and took its first state championship.

Grumpy's will now represent Rhode island in the New England Regional Tournament next month in Maine.
